Torque Droidz Sport and Droidz Force, two sub-P3k Android phones

Pinoy mobile company, Torque, just released a couple of new dual-SIM Android phones for the budget-conscious out there.

What’s new in their Droidz series is the dual-SIM Sport and Force. Both really don’t have current-generation specs but it comes with Torque’s new Droidz Flex Technology, a software optimization that will maximize the hardware capability of the device so you can do more with less.

The Droidz Sport features a 3.5” HVGA 320×480 capacitive display with a 165ppi pixel density. It uses a 1GHz single-core Spreadtrum SC6820 processor with a Mali-400 GPU. RAM is limited at 256MB and internal storage is at 512MB with support for microSD. With those specs, this device runs only on Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) OS.

It also sports a 2-megapizel fixed-focus camera (no front-facing camera), 3.5mm stereo headset, FM radio and multimedia player, Micro-USB port, motion sensor and a 1500mAh Li-Ion battery. This dual-SIM budget phone retails for just Php2,599.

The Droidz Force on the other hand, is more or less a bigger version of the Sport with its 4-inch WVGA display, that’s 800 x 480 resolution for a 233 ppi pixel density. It also uses the same 1GHz single-core Spreadtrum SC6820 processor, with 512MB RAM and 512MB internal storage plus microSD support. Rest of the specs are similar: Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread, 2-megapixel fixed focus front camera, VGA rear camera, FM Radio, and a 1500mAh Li-Ion battery.

Torque Droidz Force

The Droidz Force is basically an entry-level 4-inch dual-SIM phone that retails for just Php2,999.

DTC GT3 Astroid Android Review

Quality and affordability are the two of the most crucial things people look for in smartphones. Keeping either of these out leaves a lot to be desired. In this respect, let’s find out if the DTC GT3 meets both of these requirements and if it’s the smartphone for you.

The DTC GT3 is an Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread dual-SIM smartphone that sports a 3.5″ touch panel, a 650MHz processor, and dual-facing cameras that’s selling for an astoundingly affordable price. Continue on reading our DTC GT3 Astroid review if you’re interested in this HTC lookalike.

Design

The DTC GT3—and I can say this definitively—is inspired by the HTC Desire line. If you’re an HTC owner, you’ll just be amazed at how fantastic the DTC GT3 gets away with all the former’s looks while being a performer itself.

The DTC GT3‘s face doesn’t have any physical buttons, save for the standard Android haptic soft-touch panels at its lower portion. The earpiece grill at the top portion is split in two, a design that’s reminiscent of BMW fronts. If you prefer to be more straightforward though, yes, it’s something that looks lifted from HTC.

(Related: DTC GT2 Review)

The 0.3MP front camera sits comfortably below the grill and beside the DTC logo. The mouthpiece meanwhile is tucked away neatly and away from view at the GT3 Astroid‘s slightly curved bottom.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

The back panel of the DTC GT3 Astroid meanwhile comes in a detachable matte plastic shell filled with the company logo and some more information. This is also where the 5MP camera (/w flash) is featured, together with a 16-hole speaker grill.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Fortunately DTC saves us from all the random gibberish found beside the camera area we see in most smartphones today. That gives the camera more business and less distraction.

Like its little brother the GT2, the GT3 Astroid also carries the same push-down slide-down mechanism in removing the back panel. Don’t even try to pry it open.

At the left side is the smartphone’s volume rocker. The standard 3.5mm audio jack and the power/sleep/wake button meanwhile are both located at the top side. The charging port, on the other hand, is a micro-5 pin USB terminal found at the lower right side of the GT3.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Its smooth back complemented by its thin profile definitely makes holding the DTC GT3 feel very nice and comfortable. For its size, the DTC GT3 is surprisingly light. In fact, maybe too light. It doesn’t miss a beat in its performance though. More on this later.

Display

The GT3 Astroid‘s display is of the standard HVGA LCD variant, and when I say standard I mean the minimum most acceptable display area of 3.5″ and a screen resolution of 320×480. Plus, it’s a capacitive type touch panel (then again, resistive types are very unpopular).

Mentioning what was mentioned about the GT2: Imitation is the best form of flattery. And the GT3 gets away with it perfectly. This smartphone’s UI, from the clock to the weather to the arched menu area screams of HTC whatever way you look at it. But having an HTC look doesn’t totally mean you’re ripping one off. The DTC GT3 Astroid can definitely pulls its own weight against competitors in the same price range, all aspects-wise.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Yes it doesn’t blow your mind with awe-inspiring display, but for its price range what you pay is what you get. To its defense, the DTC GT3 Astroid offers decent colors and good viewing angles, not the type to hurt your eyes.

The GT3 Astroid‘s menu screen is also of the standard Android variety. It also features the ability to split your apps from the downloaded to your favorited. A welcome addition especially if you’re looking for something you can’t locate in your library.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Another thing to love about this DTC smartphone is its touch sensitivity. Entry level smartphones having a lack of sensitivity, especially in messaging, spells a lot of wasted seconds because of false touch readings and ultimately frustration. The GT3 Astroid surprisingly cleared all that. It’s not what you’d ordinarily expect for such a price tag.

Performance

The DTC GT3 upfront is no powerhouse. But for what it lacks in numbers, it makes up for its performance. Its 650MHz MediaTek MT6573 (also found in Alcatel’s One Touch Glory 918N) can handle most of the casual game offerings found at the Google Play Store , but again, no Temple Run.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

It ranks a measly 696 on the Quadrant Standard test, 200 points below expectations. Then again, it might have something to do with its—and I place emphasis in this word—ridiculous 152MB internal memory. Lowest internal memories in entry-level Androids are usually around 256MB. Fortunately you can always get a larger capacity microSD card and expand it up to 32GB.

(Related: DTC GT3 Astroid Full Specifications)

Sans the internal storage issues, the DTC GT3 actually performs well. Games such as Angry Birds Rio (which is known to give smartphones a jolt of lag after every level, with random birds flying out of cages and all), Fruit Ninja, and the Zenonia series, show no sign of slowing down. Rendering of websites and scrolling up and down are smooth and fast. YouTube videos are streamed flawlessly.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

The only problem performance-wise with the GT3 Astroid is its home screen recall time right after mild to moderate usage. Pressing home right after an application gives you only the wallpaper, no home apps, no clock, no weather, no nothing. A simple swipe to another page of the home screen seems to fix that. Otherwise, it would remain empty, although it wouldn’t have any harmful effect on your smartphone.

Another feature that the DTC GT3 Astroid doesn’t support (that would’ve been highly welcomed) is Skype video calling.

The DTC GT3 is a dual-SIM dual-standby smartphone: Take and receive calls and messages with two network providers at the same time.

Audio and Video

With a 320×480 resolution, don’t expect crisp videos, even in HD. High quality videos in YouTube sometimes show some pixeling in fast movements, explosions, transitions, and the like. Most videos meanwhile will show up with no issues.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

The speaker at the back side of the GT3 Astroid on the other hand sounds something in between the lines of canny and acceptable. For the most part, it did the job for me while playing heavy music on loudspeaker. Sound integrity also isn’t an issue for this budget dual-SIM smartphone.

Included in the package are stock earphones. For a better sound experience, purchase of higher end audio devices are suggested.

Camera

At 5MP, one would ordinarily expect great pictures. That’s not always the case with the GT3 Astroid‘s main cam. It produces unfocused, mildly-blurred images, even with steady hands and ideal lighting conditions.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Below are sample photos taken during various times of the day.

For what it’s worth, you can definitely Instagram with this smartphone.

Battery Life

Another highlight in the DTC GT3 Astroid is it’s stellar battery life. At 1450mAh, it seems nothing much. But upon use, it shatters expectations. Even with moderate to heavy use of connection-intensive applications such as Twitter, Facebook, and GMail, the battery snails down to zero.

Ironically, as enduring as its battery life is, the DTC GT3 Astroid takes almost five hours to charge, from zero to a hundred. Yes, that’s how long this thing takes to fully charge. Charging around 40% of battery life is suggested to avoid long charging times.

Expect 8 hours of juice with moderate to heavy usage of the GT3 Astroid.

Other Features

The GT3 Astroid features full games of Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds Rio, and a native flashlight application right out of the box. It also has a couple of Go! apps (such as the Go! virtual keyboard application, but that offsets the Chinese Pinyin keyboard feature that wasn’t removed). How are those for a toss-in?

Verdict

For something that looks like an HTC smartphone with the power of an iPhone 3G, you’d expect this device to be priced more (or less, depending on what views you hold). But all these points plus a dual-SIM feature to boot makes the DTC GT3 Astroid a fantastic Swiss army knife smartphone.

dtc gt3 astroid full review pictures price

Would I want this? Yes. Would I buy this? Yes. Would I enjoy using this? Definitely. Those three answered questions alone speaks for itself, even after considering a standard display, a mediocre processor, and a below-par 5MP camera.

The DTC GT3 Astroid retails for P4,990.00—a total bargain—at at all Mega One Phones and Gadgets Shop and DTC Mobile kiosks located throughout various malls within Metro Manila.

That wraps it up for this post. Share this DTC GT3 Astroid review to your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or Google Plus that are seeking to try the Android OS on a wonderful smartphone while staying on budget.

‘Till my next installment.

SHADOWGUN: DeadZone for Android and iOS Download

If you’re looking for an online shoot-em-up for your mobile, SHADOWGUN: DeadZone would probably be the game you’re looking for, provided your device can run it.

SHADOWGUN: DeadZone is a third-person shooter that uses the elements of the original SHADOWGUN game. The game involves shooting, and lots of it. For the trigger-happy, there’s the Deathmatch mode where you can rain hot iron on everything that moves. For the more team-oriented, there’s the Zone Control mode, where you and a group of other players shoot each other while attempting to capture the opponent team’s respawn points (like Capture the Flag, but easier).

SHADOWGUN: DeadZone Features

  • Dozens of weapons and equipment to choose from and upgrade

  • Challenging maps

  • Solo or team play

  • Leveling system

  • Worldwide ranking

The game comes in a freemium model i.e. you can buy stuff and play limitless for free, but certain equipment such as cosmetic helmets and avatars need a valid credit card. Good thing Madfinger Games knows what players want for free and what players will pay for.

Intel Atom poised to compete against ARM in Android device market

Intel really took its time in entering the mobile device market giving ARM chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Samsung the limelight for the past few years during the boom of Android smartphones and tablets. In this world, Intel finds itself in the role of AMD, the underdog, as it tries to gain traction against chips people have already known and trusted over the years.

Currently in the scene is the Intel Atom Saltwell chip powering just a handful of devices by less-popular Android smartphone OEM players like Acer, Lenovo, ZTE, Motorola, Xolo, and Lava; and Android tablet manufacturers such as Lenovo, Coby, Ramos, and ASUS. Still testing the waters perhaps?

What’s unknown to a lot of people is that their current system-on-a-chip (SoC) can keep-pace with ARM-based SoCs a generation higher. They’re always currently a generation lower but the performance is not.

Motorola-Razr-I

As an example, their 2GHz single-core Medfield SoC (Atom Z2480) can go head-to-head with Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip as evident with the Motorola RAZR i versus the Motorola RAZR M, two similar phones having different but same-class chips.

In the tablet side, a prime example would be the recently-released ASUS Fonepad carrying a 1.6GHz single-core Intel Atom Z2460. Because of Intel Atom’s fast memory access speed, it gets a faster overall response time compared to the quad-core Nexus 7 and the dual-core Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

ASUSFonePad01.jpg

With six energy states including an enhanced Intel Deep State, the 4270mAh battery on the ASUS Fonepad lasts longer than Nexus 7’s 4325mAh battery by two hours. Intel’s Burst Performance Technology can make this happen with a processor that smartly scales between a zero-power C6 standby mode, low, high, and max-frequency mode, according to demand.

These Atom processors are also optimized for Android OS, enhanced using Dalvik VM runtime optimization, x86 trace-based JIT, Native Code Generation, JavaScript, and HTML 5 code execution. Unlike Google devices though, each Android OS upgrade requires some sort of code optimization from Intel for the processor to function optimally.

Silvermont

But knowing Intel, they already have the next-generation Intel Atom processor for Android on hand. The smaller 22nm Silvermont chip will feature 3x higher performance and 5x lower power than its predecessor. It will be interesting how this will fare against the new-gen quad-core chips from ARM.

Time to shine for Intel and let’s just wait and see who will be the first premium brand that will carry a flagship phone that will run on an Intel Atom chip. And hopefully, the price will be competitive compared to its ARM brothers.

PPSSPP is an Actually Working PSP Emulator on Android

With the great rise of computing power on mobile devices, it’s almost a given that it can pretty much handle everything (no Crysis 3 here yet). That’s why I was just half-surprised when I found an actually working PSP emulator on Android, aptly called PPSSPP. And to think that everyone was playing this handheld 2 years ago.

PPSSPP is far from perfection—it lags, freezes, restarts, and everything you can say about a new emulator—but it’s working and it’s developing fast. That’s a good sign above anything else. I even played the first DJ Max with it. And although it lagged heavily as I’ve mentioned, the prospect of reliving my glorious PSP days in my mobile excites me to no end.

But how would you play PSP games on your Android if there’s no UMD slot or PSN account to download it from? Let’s juts say that if you can google it, you’re already halfway there. However, we DO NOT condone to piracy.

PPSSPP Device Compatibility List

These are the confirmed devices that can run the PPSSPP app. I’m using a Cherry Mobile Skyfire, and it works great. I think as long as you’re using a dual-core device (the developer’s website claims even single core devices can run it), you’re off fine.

  • Nexus S

  • Galaxy Nexus

  • Nexus 4

  • Nexus 7

Essential Android Apps for Teachers

So you"re a teacher and you"ve got your Android phone? If you are not using the apps listed below, you"re not using that wonderful piece of technology in your hands to its full potential.

This is a list of the different Android apps that I found useful when I taught Chemistry and Physics here in the Philippines. I hope you"ll use them too and that these apps will make your work as a teacher easier.

1. Kingsoft Office (Free) or Documents To Go (Paid)

Let"s face it, teachers should be very familiar with Excel and its many functions. But do we have to bring our heavy laptops to class all the time? Why not use our Android phone and a spreadsheet program that also opens and edits Excel files?

This is what I did and used my phone to record the attendance, quiz scores, recitation ratings and practical exam ratings for my students.

After a grading period, I just copy the excel file from my Android phone to my netbook and copy the data to my main spreadsheet for grades.

If you want to try Kingsoft or Documents to Go, you can download them in the Google Play Store.

2. RealCalc Scientific Calculator (Free)

This is for Mathematics teachers out there who would like to try using new technology versus the old scientific calculators. RealCalc is a free scientific calculator just for you.

Adroid has a built in calculator that can compute several trigonometric functions but it is still limited with what it can do. You can use these functions by swiping from the right to reveal the additional buttons.

If you want to try RealCalc, you can of course download it from the Google Playstore.

3. Merriam Webster Dictionary (Free)

English Language teachers, this is for you. Merriam Webster offers a free dictionary which also works offline. It is complete with almost all the words that I know and those that I don"t.

It has a search bar that shows a drop down list of the matched words with what you type. It even has a search by voice function but needs internet connection to do so.

This is the perfect dictionary for Android phones.

4. Evernote (Free)

Even teachers needs to take down notes in meetings, seminars and even when listening to student"s reports. This is when Evernote comes in handy.

With this app, you can create notes, lists and sync them with the Evernote software on your laptop or desktop computer.

I personally found this useful when I was taking down notes for each group of the Investigatory Project in my Chemistry and Physics classes.

5. Class Dojo (free)

Now this one is especially made for teachers. Class dojo gives each student personalized feedback which you can easily make.

If a student is helping others frequently, you can indicate it in class dojo and that student will see that positive feedback.

Likewise, if a student is not behaving properly in class, you can also indicate it in the Class dojo and he or she will immediately correct that mistake.

Do you have an Android app that you think is worthy in this list?

Share it in the comments and I will try them so that I can include them in this list of Essential Apps for Teachers.
